Hammond's Secrecy - Ogdensburg Journal Editorial (10/13/09)
“While members of the Hammond Town Board like to protest that they are not keeping secrets from the people who elected them, the reality is that they do….It’s clear to us that the Hammond community must decide whether they want to know what’s happening in their community or whether they want to sit back and allow the town board to conceal public information from them.” - The Journal, October 2009

The "Campaign For Good Government" is Underway (10/9/09)
The Republican candidates held their second and third neighborhood coffees this week, attended by over fifty Hammond town residents. Their campaign has been named the Campaign for Good Government in an effort to bring open, responsible and responsive town government to Hammond. Ron Bertram is running for Town Supervisor, Doug Delosh and Dr. Jim Tague are running for the two Town Council seats and Rose Whittier-Brown is running for Town Clerk.
Ron Bertram spoke first and emphasized that his long-term involvement in both local and county affairs will help the community & current economic environment grow. Ron has been interested in the supervisor position for many years and feels now is the most important time that new leadership is needed in Hammond. Ron stated that the entire ticket is committed to an open and responsive government, which many of the Hammond citizens feel is missing with the current administration. He also referred to the “Hammond’s Secrecy” editorial published by the Ogdensburg Journal this past winter. Ron stated “Regardless of the issue(s) and our personal feelings, all of us are committed to an open, fair and most importantly, responsive government.”
Doug Delosh spoke next and commented on the need to revitalize Hammond and encourage new, small business to come to town. Doug believes that the current board has been partly responsible for the lack of small economic development in Hammond and a clear vision for the future needs to be set forth.
Jim Tague, DDS, spoke about how his continued experience with the school board and his church consistory has taught him the importance of reaching out to all members of the community to solve problems. Hammond is not the only town that is facing serious challenges, and Jim believes there is always a way to reach compromise if people in office are willing to seek it.
Rose Whittier-Brown, candidate for Town Clerk, commented on the need for the clerk to be available to the public, especially at tax time and that she was committed to “being there.” Responding to questions, Rose referred to her computer skills to significantly enhance the town’s web site, in making town board minutes widely available and the creation of a periodic news letter to help keep all of the citizens knowledgeable of current activities and updates to town policies set forth by any administration.
Erica Demick, Republican chairperson, concluded by thanking everyone for attending; reminding them to vote on Nov 3 and asking for their support to bring positive change and new vision to Hammond.
